I am looking to get my first mountain bike over here, I am just learning can anyone recommend either a good starter bike or a good place to get one from?
Cheers

Okay, thank you blacksheep.
I'm now in New Westminster btw; so call me up if you want to go indoor climbing ketchup or any of you that climb (those originally on this forum that is).  Call me 604  777 0593.
I got my bank account sorted today, and went food shopping, that was funny!  Everyone loves my accent; theirs is very nice too, lol.

Cheeky maybe; but, I just asked this fella if he wanted to sell me this bike for the current bid price and then remove from ebay; I owned one similar to this, and almost gave mine away in a similar way; but easier than shipping it I felt to just buy another.. his reply lol:

You must be hanging out at Blunt Brothers too much. This bike was $1700 new. Good luck bidding. I love VCBC.

Nice colour too! :)
Suzanne Posted - 3/14/2007 7:39:07 AM

looks similar style to what I had; how much does that weigh kiwi?

Light is good for uphill climbs; fast descents; and blasting in general on xc terrain.  If bumpy you just lift your backside off saddle ;)     These newer xc bikes mean you don't have to though.

Ooops:
Cove Hummer

It all depends on what you are doing, here's another thats super light:

Suzanne Posted - 3/12/2007 12:10:08 PM
Mine was 24lbs, I like light.  I guess it's due to the part beneath the frame (for xc).  That is a new type of bike since I bought mine, and yes alot comfier though on going over bumpy ground.
blacksheep Posted - 3/12/2007 8:24:15 AM
I think she comes in at around 32lb.  But it would depend on the build kit.  The hustler is perfect for getting up and down the hills.

Suzanne Posted - 3/12/2007 1:51:22 AM
Very nice!  How much does it weigh?  And how much does it cost?
blacksheep Posted - 3/12/2007 12:00:33 AM
Here's a pic of the Cove Hustler.  This is a do it all bike, but designed specifically for XC.

Was a girl of many words, stupid pc wouldn't post what I'd said, and then I thought sod it! and gave up. lol!

Was recommending 'proper' mountain bikes to opt for; though those cove ones sound good, I've not seen one 'yet' so cannot comment.  But defo Trek, Scott, Marin, GT, Klein, Cannondale, Saracen, Kona etc are all good bikes.  I've owned a GT; and then a Trek, both were great bikes.

Suzanne ... you are a girl of few words.

If you look in the gallery I'm riding a Cove playmate.  Cove make *tough* bikes, and they are designed and built right here in Vancouver.   They have a range of models, each suitable for different types of riding.
TuffCookie Posted - 12/15/2006 10:01:06 AM
Are you doing downhill or xcountry biking? I'd suggest going to a mtn biking store - but a "cycle shop". Deep Cove bikes has the best prices in town on Konas...which I believe are the best quality for starter level. If you want to get serious later, I'd look at a Cannondale. I prefer lighter compenents but then I ride my bike on road and trail. Stick to brands like Shimano and Marzocchi for shocks (they are very expensive but anything is better than Rox Shocks, they break down ALL the time if you are riding downhill).

Cables & Cogs on W. Broadway west of Arbutus are great guys to deal with-closed Monday though.

check out west point cycles, they are extremely helpful and friendly, they carry a varity of bikes. Tell them what they need to know and they will find the perfect bike for you.

What type of riding are mostly going to be doing?  in the city or out on the trail?
