The Chief (Stawamus Chief) is a massive wall of granite overlooking the Squamish valley and Howe Sound. Rock climbers flock to this famous climb in the summer but for those less comfortable with sheer vertical rock there are popular hiking trails around the backside.
There are a number of summits and deep gullies to explore on The Chief. The three main summits are First peak, Second peak and Third peak (South, Centre and North) each with a large expanse of glacier polished granite and incredible views of the area. These areas are all assessable by trails. South Peak is the most popular so in the busy months try Centre or North to avoid the crowds.
The steep and rugged trails require a reasonable level of fitness and good footwear. Towards the top there are ladders and ropes bolted into the granite to help navigate particularly steep and slippery sections.
